Infants

At Polka Dot Academy we promote a shared understanding of children as competent, capable and rich in potential. We set out broad goals for children and expectations for programs organized around the four foundations of belonging, well-being, engagement and expression, also describes pedagogical approaches to guide educators and administrators in considering how best to support children’s learning and development. Our unique full-day program offers a caring and stimulating environment designed to meet the individual needs of each child. Personalized schedules, feeding times and daily charting help each child to develop at their own pace. Time is spent both indoors and outside and children are encouraged to explore their world in a safe and loving environment. Daily activities, crafts, songs, games and age appropriate educational toys all combine to provide the perfect atmosphere for growing minds and bodies. The teacher/child ratio in our infant rooms is 1:3, our infant teachers truly take time to learn the children's development and create programs for them each week. With this age group, we do allow the parents to visit the center with their child during a transition period. This period consists of two days: The first day the parents visit with their child for one and a half hours & on the second day the child visits alone for one and a half hours. This time allows the teachers to observe the interactions between child and parent as well as helping the parent in getting to know the teachers. We want our parents to feel as comfortable as possible with our program and begin to develop a trusting relationship with us before they leave their little wee ones in our care.

Toddlers

Polka Dot Academy has developed a creative early childhood curriculum that incorporates Montessori educational principles with an exceptional level of care in a nurturing environment. Our daycare provides both play based and academic learning with highly trained teachers. Polka Dot staff provide a wide diversity of songs/finger rhymes along with other language activities for listening and learning. Tricky and significant activities surrounding Drama and Art such as dressing, cooking and laying the table or working with different types of brushes, paper and glue, playing with items in the water/sand table and open-ended questions open the opportunities for children to learn the world around them and develop their fine motor and cognitive skills. Toddlers love their daily buggy rides as well as outdoor time in our Toddler Play area. The classes have daily activities that involve nature, real life experiences, dramatic play, sensory activities, gross motor/fine motor and literacy time. These are well observed by the teacher and are documented for the parents to review. Toddlers enjoy everything above, but most of all, socializing with each other.  Our teachers also introduce “toilet training” in this program, and help the children get onto a routine so they can become successful.

Junior Pre-School

Our Pre-K program prepares children for kindergarten by teaching foundational literacy and math skills. Children learn letter-sound relationships, sight word recognition and basic mathematical functions. We also provide a character education program to nurture important social and emotional skills such as listening, understanding feelings and resolving conflicts. The class has two hours of outdoor time to help burn some energy as well as develop those gross motor skills. In class, the children have a circle time where they read, sing, talk about letters, numbers, shapes & colours and much more! The juniors do participate in a mini phonics program as well as French and Mandarin bilingual classes to help prepare them for school entry.

Senior Pre-School

At Polka-Dot-Academy our pre-school program promotes a balance of positive learning and playing to build a strong foundation for your child’s future development at the JK/SK level. We provide programs like, History which introduces children to the past, the present and the future of planet Earth, Canadian history, traditions of children’s ancestors, and Canadian Holiday’s. Language development includes reading and writing as the basic form of learning, as well as, music, circle time, puppet shows, stories and poetry. Reading is being taught in a form of phonogram booklets, phonetic cards and puzzle words. Children are being encouraged to explain what they have read which helps them understand the story better, enrich vocabulary and develop their knowledge and language skills. Mathematics is being introduced to the children in order to develop their logical, sensorial, practical life, coordination and concentration skills. Age appropriate stories are read throughout the day by our enthusiastic staff, and we ensure that our daily reading programs will help enrich your child’s language skills. To add excitement to the concept of reading, we encourage children to choose their favorite stories from an array of books in our library.
